Downtown Calgary An impressive skyline has evolved since the 80's and lays proof of the wealth of the natural resource industry in Alberta. The major oil and natural companies, many of which are headquartered in Calgary gas have built their own towers of steel and glass. Check out the Calgary Tower which is over 600 feet and provides quite a dramatic view of the city, the Olympic saddledome as well as the mountains and the prairies. You can also eat and have drinks in the Panoramic Restaurant and lounge. Right across the street you will find the Calgary Glenbow Museum and the Stephen Avenue Mall is a great place to walk around. This is a pedestrian avenue, a pedestrian mall of sorts made up of some beautiful sandstone buildings which house cafes, restaurants and art galleries. Cobblestone walkways, benches and fountains add to the quaint and pretty feel of this street. It is even more pleasant since cars cannot access this zone. Come and stroll, sit outside and sip a coffee or power shop in one of the many upscale boutiques. It's a great area especially in thesummertime
Calgary - Fish Creek Provincial Park This is the largest urban park in Canada and is home in the summertime to the Calgary stampede- the well known summer rodeo festival that draws in thousands into the city and creates a sense of city euphoria and civic pride.
Fort Calgary Historic Park This park was built in 1975 to celebrate Calgary's centennial. Go and see the interpretive Center an audiovisual display that gives you a tour of the province and the prairies.
Calgary Zoo The zoo on the St George's island is renowned in North America. This is because it is not just a typical zoo which cages its animals in quite confined spaces. The Calgary Zoo has recreated a natural simulated environments for its animals. It is quite an interesting and especially well designed zoo. Come to the zoo in May during tulip flowering season and see the exotic butterflies in action. The exhibits are broken down according to continents.
Chinatown Calgary has a pretty sizeable Chinatown- Walk through it and definitely go and see the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre. This is a recently built structure and is the pride of the Calgary Chinese community. This centre is home to a museum, a gym, a library, shops and restaurants and is architecturally interesting. Look at the dome which is quite impressive, which was influenced by the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. As you enter you cannot miss the mammoth gold Dragon which is daunting and quite overpowering.
Olympic Park. Calgary's Pride and Joy was hosting the 1988 Winter Olympic and what a success it was. Since then tourists and residents alike flock to the Calgary Olympic park which is now used for competitive training and competitions. Check out the Olympic village. One must also stop at the Olympic Hall of Fame. In this centre, sprawled onto three floors are Olympic souvenirs of all kinds, from pictures of winners, photographs of athletes in action as well as sporting equipment of the athletes themselves.
